The Day of Remembrance marks the anniversary of the date that Executive Order (EO) 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. EO 9066 was the presidential mandate that ordered Japanese Americans incarcerated in internment camps; it was later rescinded by President Gerald Ford on February 19, 1976. Across the nation, local chapters of the JACL hold annual events and workshops to recognize the Day of Remembrance and educate the public about the experiences of the Japanese Americans during World War II.
The JACL is the Nation’s oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organizations in the United States. The JACL has a long and proud history of ensuring civil rights in our country, not only for the Japanese American community, but for others who have faced prejudice and injustices. At this critical time in America’s history, the JACL continues to work to ensure that the American ideals of equality and justice remain ever important today, just as they have been for centuries.
